/I'm looking to get a scissor lift. I think 25-30 feet is a good working height and it should be able to fit through commercial doorways. What is a fair price..? I see one for 2900.. and others for 8000 and up. what did some of you pay for one? Do most of you guys just rent..?
I always rent. I have never had a customer complain about paying for a lift. I've seen a few on CL for a few thousand, but I will never own.
As a rental, it gets dropped off and picked up, and maintenance is free. I had a lift stop working, rental yard had it fixed before I came back from lunch. The no hassles, no worries is worth way more that trying to save rental fees.
Around here, an electric scissor lift that has a max platform height of 28' and a width of 30" rents for $225 per day or $750 per week with a $55 delivery/pickup fee. It is common for me to need a lift for a total of 3-5 weeks on a commercial job such as a gymnasium, church or warehouse. Most commercial jobs requiring a scissor lift have double doors so I prefer to use a lift with a platform width of at least 42". The wider platform makes it easier for 2 people to work and have materials on the lift. Renting makes sense until you reach the point where you are buying a lift every 2 years with the rent you are paying. I got to that point, paying $15k in a year, and bought a used one. I charge the jobs I use it on $75 per day or $300 per week to cover upkeep and hauling(I already owned a trailer). It paid for itself the first 9 months I owned it. There are a few other contractors/friends who rent it from me when I'm not using it at the $75/$300 rates. You will just have to do the math for your situation and roll the dice.
Rolling the dice to make your decision? Better have to do the math. Considering the old and second-handed lifts, most parts have already been outside of warranty period. Google the used lifts accident and you would get plenty of bad news there.
Not only the parts, but also the operator’s safety and insurance matters a lot.
